ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. My dearest Edward,

I want to get this written so the post man can take it when he comes along, then it can go up on the El Dorado this afternoon. I have just written a note to Martha and Joc. I sent them a picture of Ruth Heidt that I cut out of The Tribune yesterday. It is perfectly wonderful and I hope that Martha shows it to you, dear.

Mother and Dad have not gotten home yet. I expected them last night, I guess they either stayed at Biggs, California last night

or somewhere along the way down. I guess you all had a good time yesterday. I hope Martha had enough chairs to seat you. It rained hard all day here yesterday.

I practised [practice] in the morning. In the afternoon we had a big fire down stairs. We played the Victrola. I have been playing the record you gave me over and over, dear. Saturday I bought Just a Japanese Sandman, by Art Hickman. It is real good.

Even though you have been gone only two days, I miss you so much and it seems as if you have been gone for ages. I will be so glad when Thursday comes and I will see you again, dear. I hope that you are having a nice time, and

that you were not tired out from the long ride up there. Take good care of yourself and don't get sick.

When you come home I will show you how grand I can drive. Saturday I drove over the railroad tracks, shifted the gears and everything. I am simply crazy about it. Of course I will have to have loads more lessons before I can ever take it out alone.

The play was very good Saturday. It was both sad and funny. I suppose you know that Cal beat Washington. I guess the Cal and Stanford game will be very exciting. I am crazy to go.

Artha, (not a boy), and Ruth came to tea last night.

We put the card table up in the parlor and ate in front of the fire. We went to bed a little after nine.

I was going to write to you last night but I knew that you wouldn't get it any sooner, so I waited till this morning. I was thinking of you all day yesterday, dear, just wishing you were with me. I hope that I get a letter from you to-day, I am crazy to hear from you.

Well, sweetheart, it is time for me to close. Be a good boy. Think of me when you have time.

Lots of love, Marion
