An awful congestion in
traffic. Took fifty minutes
to come from the unloading
park to Vailly. Steering wheel
very loose and the road
slippery in the mud. Hard
to handle the car. Home
at twelve P.M.

Took the 550 boys
to the lower camp in one
of their camions. Cold
wet and slippery. Wanted
to write letters but had to
keep my hands in my pockets
to keep them warm. Rained
all day. Cold and windy.
After dinner we tried to
build a fire in the baricks [barracks]
to get dry and warm. First
tried a basen [basin] full of coal
