Saturday afternoon

Dear Lela:

I will try and write you
a few lines if I do not go to
sleep doing it. We are getting up
at five-fifteen in the morning
now and taps does not blow
until ten-thirty. Of course we
can go to bed earlier than
that but there is no chance
getting to sleep with the bunch
of corporals there is in the tent.
One of us will start an argument
and it generally lasts until taps.
These new men must be
used to getting us with the
chickens as they are usually
up about four thirty pounding
up and down the street. Believe
me they will soon get out of
that habit after they have been
in the army a little longer.

I have to go on guard
this afternoon at four o'clock, and
that will mean I will loose awhole
lot more of good "shut-eye" I
