ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection includes 49 letters and postcards written by Albert W. Newlove to his parents in Arroyo Grande, California. In his letters, Newlove describes military life, sailing to Europe, the French countryside, his eagerness for battle, and observations of German prisoners. Newlove enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in early 1918, and trained at Mare Island, California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division (5th Regiment, 17th Company) and fought on the Western Front in France. In October 1918, Newlove was stricken with influenza and recuperated in a hospital near Bordeaux. Upon return to duty he was assigned to serve in the Army of Occupation stationed in the vicinity of Neuwied, Germany. Once discharged Newlove returned to San Luis Obispo County.

knows Barton Draper and Percy Phoenix. He went to Davis Farm School the same time they did. We have been feeding a good deal better the last week or so. The Chaplain gets a Commissary supply in every week and sells it to us. So I have been getting quite a bit of sweets lately.

I wish they would hurry up and sign up the peace terms and then maybe we will come home.

Have been in the service a year now and will rate another service trip in the last of May.

Well I hope this finds you all well. Your son, Albert.

Niederbreitbach, Germany. Feb. 16, 1919.

Dear mother:

Tis Sunday again so will write a few letters. Am sending you a Panorama of the Rhine in a different envelope and hope you get it. Also sent some postals to Ida and Ruby. I went to Neuwied last Wednesday to watch a football game between our division team and the 32nd division team. We came out on top 18 to 0. It was a very interesting game though but pretty rough. There must have been at least ten thousand

people there. Four or five bands so we had plenty of music Neuwied is quite a town. Never had much time to take in the town as we left night after the game. Our company team played the 49th Co yesterday afternoon and were beaten - 31-0. Nearly every one in the Co had a bet upon the game.

We had a little over twelve thousand francs up. The 49th can sure celebrate now. It has been pretty cold here lately. The creek is frozen up & one can skate on it in a good many places. Is it that cold at home? Was sorry to hear about Mr. Hixon & the Sheehy girl dying. The Flu must be a good deal worse in the states than it is over here. It dont seem to be very bad over here now. I have still got that postal money order and am going to try and get it cashed by the Chaplain.

Haven't rec'd any papers for quite a while I get my other mail pretty regular though. Well I can't think of any thing more so guess
