Albert Newlove WWI Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection includes 49 letters and postcards written by Albert W. Newlove to his parents in Arroyo Grande, California. In his letters, Newlove describes military life, sailing to Europe, the French countryside, his eagerness for battle, and observations of German prisoners. Newlove enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in early 1918, and trained at Mare Island, California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division (5th Regiment, 17th Company) and fought on the Western Front in France. In October 1918, Newlove was stricken with influenza and recuperated in a hospital near Bordeaux. Upon return to duty he was assigned to serve in the Army of Occupation stationed in the vicinity of Neuwied, Germany. Once discharged Newlove returned to San Luis Obispo County.

Mch. 29, 1918.

Dear mother:

Rec'd your letter this afternoon. We get our liberty tomorrow at noon & it runs up to eleven-thirty Sun eve. Am sorry but dont think I can possible get over to Frisco as I am dead broke which seems to be the same with everybody here. It wouldn't do any good to send any money now as it would not reach me in time any way. If you had sent me word a few days ahead of time I could have made it alright. A bunch of Marines go to Frisco Monday to take part in the parade but dont know yet whether our Section will be in the bunch

Am feeling fine now. Got rid of my cold for a wonder. It sure has been hot here the last few days. Rec'd the wrist watch Wednesday and I sure feel proud of it. Thanks very much for it. Well mother my time is limited as it is nearly ten o'clock so will close hoping to hear from you soon and be sure & let me know whether you will still be in Frisco next friday. Your loving son,

Albert N.

Dear mother:

Rec'd your letter this p.m. I wrote you a letter the same day I got the letter and addressed it to the Stewart Hotel. You ought to have got it before now. Didn't get to go to Frisco, but think we get off Friday. What do you want me to do stopped off at San Jose or buy a ticket straight through to home.

Got a letter from Aunt Nell and she said she was expecting me there Sat. I would get in San Jose about 10:30 a.m. I think as the train leaves Oakland at 8 o'clock. So you can tell Aunt Nell whats what.
