with so little ahead that they are begging by the hundreds and starving too. Banks and merchants all over the country are closing up. A great many will have to break and start again. While I was gone the boys Frank Lew and Kib finished the haying had loads then Frank and Lew went up to Spring canion [canyon] to fix up some troughs and arrange it so that the stock up there would get plenty of water. Kib irrigated yesterday on the stubble of the wheat and oats over in the N W corner run water from the lake that Will and Anda Kingland kindly gave us.

Sat 22 Hot and dry as ever. Frank and Lew got home about supper time. Report one new Holstien for Lew and a fine prospect for another. They think we will have no trouble for water after this. I irrigated on the wheat and oat stubble and got it most done and in my leisure hours I hoed strawberries. Kib went to town and come back sick and hoed a little this afternoon.

Sun July 23 Hot and dry and threatened rain quite a bit. Lew and his Mary went up to the ranch after a cow and calf of theirs and got then [them]. Kib went to Dotts's after Meda and got her. Frank and his Mary kept Sun [Sunday] and he went a fishing. I finished the piece in the corner and irrigated the door yard and cabbage etc.

Mon July 24 Hot to day as ever only it was cloudy quite a good part of the time and rained some not far away as near as Kinglands. Anyhow Kib hoed strawberry plants and went a fishing this afternoon. Lew worked at the strawberry patch mostly but raked up the barley. I mowed the barley and Frank and I shocked it. The rest of the time I worked at the strawberry patch.

Tues July 25 Cloudy all day and some cooler and we had heavy rain on all sides of us but none here to speak of and to night [tonight] it looks very rainy and is sprinkling quite smart right now. Finished irrigating the strawberries and fixed fence harvested the pear and plowed out the french and the string beans and hoed them and plowed the potatoes and cabbage.

Wed July 26 A day like yesterday only it didnt rain all around us but it rained at the ranch and on down south it rained a big heap but didnt rain here. Lew plowed with Dom and the double shovel plow stirred up the lower orchard and got ready to begin the piece towards the barn. I hoed all day killed some weeds and there is lots that I didnt kill.

Fri July 28 Dry and hot. Lew and I hoed.

Sat July 29 Hot and dry as usual. The fishermen got home about 4 O clock. They didnt catch many fish for the grasshoppers are awful thick all about the river and the fish are fat and saucy. Lew went to town and took over the cream. I hoed out the potatoes and towards night Mother and I went up to John Dragers. We found pretty poorly as she had been to the dentists and had 22 teeth pulled at one sitting. She looks very bad and feels so too.

Sun July 30 I think it was a little cooler to day. We staid [stayed] at Johns and started for home about 3 O clock. Went by Chas [Charles] Pennocks and looked over the place then come on and stopped at Charleys and staid [stayed] a few minutes then come on home.

Mon July 31 Same as usual big shower east of us. Kib hoed. Lew and Mary went up to the ranch after the big roan heifer and her calf. Going to leave with Charleys folks to keep for her milk. They have not got home yet. I mowed the piece north of the house in the forenoon and in the afternoon done various jobs.
