Chancery Clerks Office Warren County Mississippi Vicksburg, April 8th 1876

To His Excellency Hon J M Stone Governor of Mississippi—

Sir—

The recent amendments to the State Constitution, and changes in the laws affecting judicial positions have raised questions concerning the term of office of myself and others similarly situated, to settle which by litigation, must necessarily involve the courts, and embarass the rights and intents of litigants and the community. I know of no considerations that should promt me to become a party to search results. My resignation will be effectual to remove all doubts so far as concerns the Chancery District over which I have had the honor to preside for nearly six years last past. I therefore hereby resigned the office of Chancellor for the 14th Chancery District of Miss. to take effect immediately. I take this occasion of expressing to all gentlemen of the bar ^my gratitude^ for the courtesy which, as such Chancellor, I have had the honor to receive at their hands

yr obt Servt.
