each other. Her sister was the wife of James Campbell,
Esq. a Gentleman of high character & standing &
the acknowledged head of the Winchester bar- She
was herself most beautiful, & highly accoplished
certainly, one of the most lovely women I ever
saw. Her father, Col. H had been a man
of fortune & for many years, a prominent Lawyer
& politician- had, had the command of a
Regiment in the Army of the U.S. in the then
late war, with Great Britain. He had become
acquainted with Thos. P. in Kent, where he
had heard him make a creditable profession
al [professional] effort in some case in the Nicholas Court.
His first speeches in Tennessee, particularly in
the Franklin & Warren Courts, obtained for him
a very high character for to gain a legal
learning. Ho. A & Mr. Campbell paid him
marked attention - Miss Anderson's Mother
was dead. She lived with her Sister Ms. C. in
Winchester. His frequent calls at the house
of Ms. C. very soon gave rise to the opinion, that
he & Miss A. wanted be married. They were
married on the 7th of March 1827, the Anni
versary of his birth, he being on that day twenty
four years of age. My dear wife's health
was declining rapedly - and in the month, I
took her, accompanied by our daughter to the
Blount Springs, where we remained two or
3 months, & I returned home with her health
somewhat improved, but in a very short time
she grew worse. We spent the latter part of the
Summer at the sulphur spring near Winchester,
but without being benefited by the use of the
water, and after suffering for several months, at
most insupportable pain, she died in great
