1870 Jany 22nd I went to shop got 1 Dicth Dutch Plow & singletree, no Colter Saml getting slabs for Mr Whitehead in morning in evening I found him & Wm cutting & Caroline & Keatts went to old place fixed agreements with Randol Sam & Charlotte Hodnette & Jorden Graves for 1870 weather cloudy & moderate Nannie has been sick all the week will take some medicine tonight

23rd Moderate day stayed at home Nannie

24th Hung up our meat this morning & fanned out Our wheat & divided it mine in Bbl or Hhd in Toll Corn & bbl. 1 Bbl my own some onions in it & Bags Hh my own make the smallest Hogs - & Box behind door in Granary is Richards, Mr Keatts Plowing with 2 Horses for Tobacco Sam & Caroline in new ground cloudy & moderate weather - could not find my Hogs sold Sam 15 lb Lard Butter Pot & all Pot to be taken & paid in cash Pot to be deducted Lard @ 21¢ per lb

25th Striping tobacco over next to Mr Keatts owens Barn. Rained nearly all night last night Lowry gone to Barn the striped in owens barn

26th Sam & Wyatt got Boards for Mr Whitehead nearly all this day, they cut a little while in evening Mr Keatts & Carolene cut nearly all day. - I went to Mill for Mr Keatts Carried ½ Bbl & ½ Bbl wheat for him I let him have I also carried 1 Bushel wheat for Mr Wyatt, & brot back from Mt Airy 1 Box & 4 flour Barrels Bot of Jacobs P. Graves 40¢ for flour bbls & 2/3 for Box making 77½ Cents owe to Jacob Beautifull weather found all my hogs but 2 one of which is my Boar Large size from moses Sow but they went off again

27 Sam & Wyatt Cutting in new ground & Caroline Mr Keatts Plowing 2 Horses in Lot for Tobacco cloudy & moderate weather Doron went to shop brot home 1 plow Hoe Dutch Colter lap ring Br[lost in margin] Knife & clevice[clevis] pen

1870. May 10th Rained yesterday in evening we planted some corn peas snaps on Branch planted about ⅓ of Branch in Corn Hired Mary Smith Worked out Irish Potatoes & replanted some in Patch replanted rostingrostining year Patch Sam finished coltering new ground & fresh ground yesterday Keatts gets along very slow & always breaking something on out offed someway Planting simblings snaps etc yesterday

11th. 11 Rained all night & this morning quite cool. Striping Tobacco in new Barn at water loo & last we have hired Clabe & Cindy

12th Sent 13½ or 14 Bus wheat to Millers Mill for flour I went to Adkinson & Wards Shop got my Horse Shod & then went Millers Mill & Keatts gone home as he could not get the flour immediately Nat Picked up Rostin in new ground pt of the day & after 12 oclock they all pulled cockle out of wheat Keatts went to Coltering in new ground when he got home Rained this evening & Halled yesterday

13 Waggon Keatts & went to Cedar Hill after Blade fodder old Plows old Irons from wheels & Plank out of Old Granary my Hhd up there yet. Raining again to day & this evening too my Corn coming up very well this spring

14th Tolerable clear this morning ground too wet to Plow this morning I am going to Millers Mill Carry 2 turns Corn for Mr Whitehead & Sam & bring back My flour Bran etc Weather very cool for May Got all my flour meal etc for self & R Whitehead Sam Sold 1 Bbl flour to Mr Pringle

16th Hired Charles Lovelace 1 or 2 Months @ 40¢ a day Replanting Corn till 12 oclock

upon the Shucks Snowing yet stoped snowing about 12 or 1 oclock Snow 3 or 4 inches Deep

Feby 6th Sam hauling wood in evening for himself & me some I expect

— 7th. Snow about 4 inches deep very cold tolerable clear & cold this morning

8th. Cutting in new ground all day & I went to Mr James Kelley - Nannie & Brot Joe with hercome home yesterday

9th Striping Tobacco in old prize Barn Millard W left & did know when to strip Richards Tobaccohe would return

10th. Hauled Straw this morning & 1 Stack fodder Cutting in new ground, to day & trying to finish snow nearly gone Did not get done Cutting in new ground I went to Mount Airy to day to get P. Pints

11th. I went to S S Meeting

12 Rained all night & Raining this morning

13. Cloudy this morning Cutting rail lumber On Out Side fence next to Mr Lewiss Martin Broke his axe to day Raining to night Joseph Richard son here Come home with Nannie last week I went to Mr Woodings to see Liza sick & then went to burning brush with Lewis

14th. We all Striped in old prize barn nearly done Striping all Sam has there Snow about 3 inches deep with hail Very Sloppy & disagreeable to day

15. Striped all we had in order & Went to Richards Barn & Striped a little thats Was down & in order = finished by 12 oclock 16th & then went to Cutting in new ground cleared off & weather moderate

17th Friday Nannie gone up John R Whiteheads Edd carried her Joe Our folks are Cutting Rail Timber in John's (field Rained & Hailed a little Dark night

18th Raining tremendous hard ever since about day Break this morning then cleared off

1871 March 2 Sam Gilbert gone to Yates Mill Carried for me 4 Bushels wheat for flour 2½ Bushel Corn for meal 1 Turn for Martin Smith & 1 Turn for himself & 1½ Bushels wheat for himself fine morning Sent 1 Plow to Mr Yates to fix for me Sam Tucker plowing in Lot for Tobacco Martin malling, Lewis & Ben pillingpileing brush & wood, Ben scattering leaves in lot turn in, finished plowing Lot Sam Gilbert got all his grain ground but did not get the Plow

March 3rd Striping Tobacco day Lowry Graves finished in my old prize barn & Richards & went to new prize Barn & took down nearly all mine in the body & striped till night rained nearly the whole day

4th. Striping Tobacco in new prize Barn all day to day Hired Lowry again Alex Parthina Rose Lain Dolley Mariah Smith & our own Gang Snowed Rained & Hailed to day & moon shining to night & we striped all the body of 3 rooms of Tobacco to day took down the top striped some of that & 3 rooms with in striped Tobacco in body is mine & the striped in them rooms, Sun Shined awhile to day not long

5. Stop snowing cleared of in evening yesterday pretty day to day I staid at home all day except went to Mr Lewis’s 1 or 2 or Hours in morning

6 I went to Richards whiteheads Jeres & Kates to day old place Sallies has got a fine child which they John Richard after his Father, our folks in new ground malling piling Brush etc very pretty day & weather moderate –

7th Thrashed out oats & Fanned out 21½ Bushels Did not Finish what we had hauled up

8th Manured & Sewed over both our Plant Beds Tobacco seed & Collard & mustard seed
