On the 3rd. of April, the second day of our arrival, met Dr. Shillette at Mrs. Parkes one of the Candian pas- sengers. he is a Surgeon in the HEICS [Honourable East India Company Service] & got down here on Sick leave. he came in the "Octavia" the same ship that Dr.Taylor my old fellow student is surgeon for. I have been living on board during this time & only going on shore when the Capt. goes.

April 13th. 1858. Tuesday

My 24th. birthday. time takes me by surprise now I can scarcely fancy it possible here I am then on my 24th. birthday on board the "Belgravia" lying quietly at Anchor in Table Bay. the morning is clear beautiful & warm. the sun shining brightly through my Cabin Window & every thing around quiet. I get up to go on

"Belgravia" in Table Bay. going on shore now & then. Call on Dadson frequently. was told by o'Halloran likely to be detained at the Cape. Cape races on the 19th. & 21st. & again today. first day Capt. & I walked there and saw the last race On the 20th. went on shore in the morning to post letters arrived just in time Mr Grainger took us to the library sat till 2 oclock & went on board to dinner. 21st. Colonel Apperly, Dr. Rogers & the Capt. went to the races in a car I got a horse from the Colonel day very hot had to get off coming back. dined with the Colonel in the evening. Went on board at 9 ocl 22nd. On board all day. two ships came into the bay today a British & Russian. Capt. White was buried today. he died of

Anchored a[t] Diamond harbour this evening.

June 30th. 1858 Wednesday

Took steamer up to Calcutta Capt. & I friends again. Called on Barry on my Arrival. Got a large bundle of letters & papers. Good news from home. letter from Kate acknowledging receipt of presents. No letters from Mr. Young Mr. Acheson or James Forbes.

July 1st. 1858 Thursday.

Wriote home. 13 days in Calcutta this time during which I paid all the debts I owed every one & sent £10- home. nothing very important occured. A good many cases of Cholera about. the weather very hot during the day. Continued to live on board the "Belgravia".

Saturday 19th July 1858 woke up with great headache
