Hankens Esquire has been some time in the practice of the law, He has appeared before me in some cases, & I have been highly pleas'd with his talents & equally so with his deportment as a gentleman

He wishes the pro tem appointment of attorney General of this District & I have no doubt his appointment would give general satisfaction

Your Excellency:

The Attorney General for this district has given notice of his in= =tention to resign. I should be extremely happy if you could conceive it to be consistent with your duty to give me the pro. tem. appointment. I should be too proud to solicit the office of your Excellency did not necessity com= =pel me. I have entirely exhausted my small patrimony in preparing myself for the bar, and without some assis= =tance it may be impossible for me to arrive at that standing, without the losse of which no man should practice law. Inclosed is a letter from the honble Jno C. Hamilton.

With respect yrs &c
