Knoxville 8th June 1797

Sir

By [F?] instructions rec.d from the agent of the department of War, I am under the Necessity of Discharging the Guard Stationed at Fort Blount, I would much rather continued them Guard longer had it been in my power

I expect the a Guard will for that place will be shortly supplyed [sic] with regular troops-

As yet we are all in the dark with Respect to the business before Congress, so soon as any transpires and comes to my hand, I will do my self the honor of communicating the same to you

The people on the frontiers places much confidence in you respecting the line, and many are the conjectures what will be done

Knoxville 8th of december 1797

Sir

I have to acknowledge your two favors of the 3d and ninth of November ultimo, and beg leave to return you my thanks for the information therein Contained, and also ^for the prompt and necessary measures you took in order to have endeavor to have those [base?] murderers apprehended who had that so inhum anly killed the two cherokee indians - I beg sir, that you will use your ^utmost exertions, to have those lawless and atrocious murderors [sic] apprehended and brought to Condign punishment if possible, by Issuing

You will please to call on the officers both Civil and military of your district, to make every effort That may be necessary in order to discover and appre hend the person, or persons, that have been guilty of so flagrant and daring a piece of Violence and murder -

is by actual measurement not above 65 miles south of the Virginia line, the Kentuckey or Cumber land ^ford is near 200 miles East of the 40 miles Point and not 10 miles North of the Virginia line [?] a North east course must strike said line long before it runs 200 Miles -
