astern this Mg. 1 Ocl just in sight on the horizon Astern. A Schooner & Barque to Leeward. Going up Channel to day with a spanking breeze on the Quarter. expect to sight Land at the Start tomorrow. 194 miles off today. 133 of[f] Lizard 100 miles from Scilly breeze freshened this Mg. about 8 Ocl Mrs P. sent Steward for some Lilium this Mg. refused to give unless prescribed by myself Sent a second time refused, he told Capt. Capt. would not interfere.

Sunday July 31st. 1859.

Sighted old England (Start Point) at 10 this mg. up at 4. been blowing stiff all night. immense numbers of vessels outward bound hove to & under reefed topsails Several Cowes pilot boats lurking about [Struck through: several] one came under our Stern asked us to what port bound? would not take

the land extending a long way to the eastward dim & obscure a great number of Steamers outward bound. a lge. [written above: vessel] Supposed to be "Himalaya" with troops on bd. dipped the Ensign & lowered Skysail to her. a large number of Schooners about & other vessels. expect to be off the Isle of Wight about 10 or 11 tonight the last lans I saw on leaving England Sighted St Catharines lights at 9.15 last evening. Isle of Wight

Monday August 1st. 1859

Up at 5.30 this mg. sighted Beachy Head about 7. immense numbers if Deal boats knocking about. one came alongside about 9. oC. asked from what port & where bound? asked if we had any pas sengers to go ashore at Winchelsea for Brighton. asked charge £1. a head. followed us an hour

River Thames

& got land again on both sides of us. very tedious getting up the steamer did not tow us well the Coasts open out more & Mrs. W. thinks that England is rather pretty after all. Anchored at Gravesend about 4 ocl got two boats to take us Ashore. promised to see the ladies to London [underscored:Otheu ] with us Mrs. W & Children quite thunderstruck with ships & people. went to Railway Station no train to London for 1½ hours Walked into the Country. Came back sat down in the Railway waiting room went on to London. great stir at London Bridge got Mrs. R. &ce bundled into a Cab off to Welford Otheu & I went to have something to eat. parted & I went to the Waverly Hotel in Cheapside (German)

Sunday Jany. 27th. 1861.

After visiting the female side today had an early dinner & went to Kilburn with Dr. R. to[ok] a bus to the Marble Gate. walked through Hyde Park up by The Serpentine called at Dr. R. brother in law's at Kilburn had tea. went to the Church with Dr. R. & his sister. on returning met Dr. R.s brotr. & had supper with them. Too late for 'bus from Kilburn Gate.

Sunday Feby. 3rd. 1861.

Nothing new has occurred during this week. have been at a meeting of the Society of Arts & heard a paper read on the Adulteration of food by a Mr. Wentworth Scott. A considerable discussion took place afterwards as to the statement that 7/8th. of the tea used in England was adulterated. I have been gradually getting

everything is new. New places & associates help to pass the time pleasantly 2 months from the date of sailing from England they are landed in adventure. Fresh news are heard of the attrocitties in India. Young Albert has a brother at Cawnpore. With eagerness he looks over the list of slain. His brothers name meets his eye he had died a noble death seized by this infuriated native hes taken before the Rajah: there are no means of escape by an oversight on the part of the Savages. The Young man has his revolver with him he resolves to sell his life dearly. Five fall by his hand. The sixth shot was [struck through: destined] [Written above & struck through:Kept]for the Rajah. He shot misses he is seized bound & a death awaits him the most horrible that can be imagined crucifixion luckily the savages in their eagerness to torture give releif to the sufferer by bayonet thrusts he is
