Aug '82 - Tired after leaving Dick + Pat's so I only touched LB briefly (Sunday)

Feb '83 - Good trip mostly to LA

July '83 - Bad (see above) in LB.

Apr '84 - Good trip to LA

July '84 - Bad trip (see above) LA + LB

Sep '84 - Bad trip...very in LA + LB

Nov '84 - OK to Palm Springs + Phoenix + S.D.

San Diego trips fine, except last one with party in Laguna Beach Aug 85

Sep '85 OK in LA.

Sep '85 Not good in LA or LB or SD.

July '86 Not bad trip, but...(see above)

Oct '86 Great quick trip to LA, (not LB).

Keys to a good time:

No drugs

Spend only a short time in LA, not West H, maybe Spike or Silverlake area

No Laguna Beach - too crowded esp summer, not enough to do

Visit LA infrequently, with things to do.

Dont try to cover too much territory

NEVER HAD A FUN TIME IN LAGUNA, BUT BRIEF DAYS LIKE TODAY + FEB '83 ARE OK.

7:45 Get up. Misc. Breakfast + WSJ. Legislation to limit computerized trading. Call Mom + Dad in Portland. Didn't discuss stock crash.

9:15 Finalize thoughts on Microsoft + crash. It hasn't fallen much below summer level. I can't trade for the short term profitably. For the long term, I still expect it to increase it's best to hold it.

They dealt more with techniques than with technical details. READING CHAP 12 [yellow highlight] was one of the most informative letting me know what's important to success in animation. As I stated in "Strategy for the Second Half of 89". Its a very similar situation to what I felt in trying to be musically expressive. [yellow highlight] 5:00 Go to Irvine for frozen yogurt. Shower. 11:00 This trip to OC I have spent weekdays [underline] (nonholiday) for first time in the last six years. It's pleasant, but a little too [underline] quiet. No gay gyms. Also now that, I've done app interface for Works, I won't program [underline] anything more like it.

3:30 We land. Have something to eat in North Satellite restaurant. Write up today. Feels good to be back. Sunny. Odd that I just made flight even after screwing around in Turtle Rock this morning. After reading the appendix of Computer Animation, I realized that is what Southern California is all about. I am not a storyteller or entertainer. I keep things organized largely, and it is not my fundamental nature to act or make presentations or do things that communicate. But wait I just spent the last 2 years on parts of Works which communicate and interact. So I created a tool with which users can work, but the results itself is not a presentation. Yes it is - - a very malleable one! But I am not saying anything with it, I am just providing a tool. In a sense this encapsulates and constrains what user can do, but it also allows a lot.

4:30 As stated last night, what I want to do now is start using other people's tools creations, and see what I can do. I am bored with the book, because I want to do something with it, but without programming the lower levels. Call Schwab

4:45 Go get van to parking lot, head home. Listen to messages. Put stuff away. Look at Algorithmic Image a bit. Yes, I read that last October in LA. Thought maybe I should've just relaxed after yesterday morning, and run in the surf (Probably decided against this due to Tuesday Night's dishing of Laguna Beach trips plus traffic there Tuesday!), but what I got out of it is impossibility of my doing the work I want to do now because I read book on animation, but nothing follwed through in the evening. It's also just not a good environment for me to study that sort of thing. (style-less?) GOOD

7:05 Go home. It was bothering me that maybe I should have gone to Expo before July 11. But when? It opened in Mid May and then I spent Mem Day w/Bob, June 1 on Faillas boat, June 8 maybe (And weekdays I was very busy with selection and mouse code)

But it was just after Friday's review with Bill, and I wanted to ready Infinity & the Mind. Friday the 13th I met Bill Farrell and so that took up that wknd. June 21-22 was rafting. June 28 was gay pride weekend. July 4 was Laguna Beach.

Well, maybe it was meant to be. That way I first found out how little respect Bill can have by going out with Steve Segal. Just like last summer, I feel the summer went too fast. May was dreary so summer as just 3 months long. Not enough!

Watch Dynasty. Talk with Michael Failla. Go to bed. Not much sleep. Concerned about Bill Farrell meeting Brad Thompson.
