nice and I was glad we went.

Sunday I went riding in father-in-law's machine to Byron Hot Springs, California and the surrounding country. Just Mr. & Mrs. & Martha Elizabeth Linderman Bates & myself. Gee it was certainly great but I was terribly tired when I arrived home.

I am afraid that I'll have to do as Dr. Eaves said & take out a leave of absence for when in class I get exhausted, etc. & at present I'm way behind weight. The trouble with taking out a leave is I can't get these same prerequisite courses for a year & by that time I won't feel like going back.

Will write very soon

With love

Jocelyn Bates.

Tonight I'm going to sleep with my collar off for the 1st time. Dr. Eaves says its O.K. But I have to wear in day time for a month more & then some perhaps. I feel kind of nervous when I think of taking it off.

I must close to bring a box of candy to Sutherland's before it closes so I can mail it to you. Its for Easter, & it carries our love to you dear Snedward

With love, Jocelyn

She asked about Jocelyn & urged me to take it to the President if necessary to prevent his going into the service as it would be as bad as murder to allow him to go in – She [double underlined] said in case of certain pressure brought to bear on an injury of that kind it might [underlined] prove fatal – and injury for life would be as bad anyway & Dr. Eaves said it might [undelined] cause that. Though he never said it might.

Nelson, Butte Co., Cal.

P.S. Martha asked me when I wrote to say goodbye to you and to give you her best love, as did Mr. & Mrs. Linderman.

Dear Edward:

After staying around home the other day, I went down to Brookdale for Mr. Linderman as he went to Cuba, I came back and left for Nelson which place I arrived last night.

You remember me complaining of a bum cold and teeth aches, well I visited Dr. Eaves to find out if the after effects were causing the teeth to ache. He said impossible, so I went to Dr. James, who said my teeth were alright, so I left.

When I got there last night my front tooth ached terribly in fact I couldn't sleep last night and this morning Jewell made me go to Chico where I interviewed dentists. They all said it was an ulcerated tooth and an abscess was forming. So they drilled into the tooth and right into the nerve which was dead. They claim the dead nerve was forming gas and that I would
