[handwritten:] their young brother, who ought to be in Medical School, is at the battle front in France. I agree with them that you ought to be back in the Medical School, but you are doing a great duty in being where you are, and you will feel better for it all the days of your life. The Ince Film Co. and the Chronicle got up a film in Golden Gate Park of the relatives of the boys at the front.

Mother and I went over last Sunday and stood in a line for three hours, so that if you should happen to see the film you would not be disappointed. It is to be shown all over the American Front and we are towards the end of the film, which is a very long one. Jos expects to come home for his birthday the 17th, I dont know whether he will be able to stay over for mine on the 20th. I dont know how to address you. On your last letter on the envelope, 159th was scratched out, and underneath in pencil was written 103rd. I think I will let this letter go to the 159th until we hear from you to change the address. The figs are ripening on our tree, and Mr Kink's stomach is now full to his great joy, but to Mothers sorrow, because what goes in must come out, which means mess to clean up. The Watermans have gone to Lodi for a week. Edith has been threatened with some trouble in her nose which might mean an operation, so was sent away from the

Oct 13th 1918

My own dear Edward.

This has been a wonderful day warm, even hot & so was yesterday. It was too hot to be comfortable really.

Mrs Waltman & Edith are at Lodi near Sheldon & wanted me to come & spend the day with them but it was too hot --

A telegram came from Les today & we were very glad as his last letter from the Hotel Astor

[written vertically on left side:] Mrs Cekell sent her love --- every body does. When they ask for you their love or some message.

a few hours from Manila 10 degrees cooler considered more healthy though it is less interesting & has some drawbacks -- I hope Helen can go out there soon. I had a letter from the 89 year old lady today, she writes asking we all about each one every little while - wants all the latest news of each one!

Dick is doing that special duty but says it is not very much [underlined].

Times Star says Huge German retreat begins God grant it. Thats what Dick says too. He wrote --- of your being there & how he hates to have you there when it ought to be he [illegible].

Jack is rather sick with an infection of the Cynus [sinus] --- from that old nose operation -- Edith was threatened with the same & was ordered to the [County?] Lodi --- She writes us she is nearly well & will write to you [underlined] as soon as possible ---

Fond love as always dearest. Your loving Mother
