PS – If you do call at 4010 Alameda Drive "on Miss Dowden"[inserted above line] I think you should not speak at all as "if Dick had said anything [double underlined] about an engagement recent even after a fashin" as he says –

Just say your brother spoke of her a good deal & you know she was a friend of Leslie Brown's who is also our neighbor etc – "So on the strength of that ask if you may call"[inserted above line] – I would not pretend to have heard any such word as engagement [underlined] – unless she [underlined] says so herself. Treat her as if she were a friend of Dick's. You can tell her we have heard a lot about Margret Kew too from & Capt. & Mrs Miller If you go there to call – & Dick.

never have the chance to be one again -- The particularly nice feature of your letter was the detail -- and that is everything. I hope that now you have been billeted for awhile -- as you certainly deserve a rest and a promotion to Colonel at least for all that good work.

Everyone here -- has been fighting this awful epedemic [epidemic] of Influenza -- and so many people are ill with it -- while some have died here. Mrs. Townsend and Jean are both very ill -and Leslie Brown is just getting over it -- Poor Ruth Gith died of it -- also Mort Goggin and one of the numerous Bruzzones - Dr. A.S. Kelly - died too and aside from being a terrible loss to the profession -- he will be greatly missed by his friends. He was Eleanor and Edgar's doctor -- and was just splendid.

The Motor Corps which has just recently been organized is doing very strenuous work --

It was a lovely ride & we enjoyed it.

It was odd your meeting with Miss Garretson & Leslie Brown & all those others. I hope you are not leading too strenuous a life I mean 'rushing' about too much.

Father intends to send for you about the 30th he says so perhaps you will reach home before I do. If you do I hope you will be very careful dear not to eat a lot of indigestibles. It will be a case of shifting for yourselves I suppose & you must not eat at irregular times or you will be sick before I get there. Take care of yourself dear & dont be too energetic. You need a little rest & quiet. Much love from us all to you dear.

Your loving Mother

R. H. Bates
