I [underlined] shall not feel badly in any case dearest. I mean I won't fret if you fail –
I saw Mrs Rolph the other day in S.F. She looked young & pretty. Said Margaret is up here now – came up shortly after she left – said M– was so depressed when she was leaving she did not know how to leave her – I told her I wanted you to go & ask Margaret for a dance that night at the hotel & she said she would have been delighted to dance with you – She Mrs Rolph

[left page:] said she thought you seemed to have grown a lot older when she met you this time – I said no wonder you were having pretty hard experiences & such hard work that all you wanted was to sleep when you got off duty. She said it was the same with Captain Fairwell.

[right page:] here to her Mother for awhile – Mrs Rolph thought or spoke very highly of you and said "Edward suited me [double underlined]" all right or words to that effect.
Well dearest I must say goodby. Aunt E has phoned & so Jocelyn John & I are going down there to go over the house they have taken –
Fondest love from us all Your loving Mother
