Gentlemen We the undersigned petitioners would most respectfully represent that Depot Street (between Box Street and Birch Street) is frequently during the rainy season almost impassible teams often miring down on account of the depth of the mud and water and that the said Depot Street be planked a distance of two ploers[?] from Box Street to Birch Street and your petitioners will ever pray. To The Honorable the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Seattle

Gentlemen:

We, the undersigned, residents and property owners on Depot Street and Birch streets, do hereby petition your honorable body to extend the sewer from Cedar street along Depot street to Birch street; and thence along Birch street as far as practicable.

We would further represent to you that the sanitary conditions of this vicinty are such as to demand your immediate attention, there being on Birch street alone, thirtynine (39) dwellings built or in course of construction.

609 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Mar 21/85 Be it remembered that on this 20th day of March 1885 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to law. The following Officers are present, to wit: His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmembers B.H. Northup, Alfred Snyder, H.L Yesler, W.G. Latimer and W.V Rinehart. Thereupon the following proceedings are had. Petitions Rec'd James St planking of sewer in 5th St. into James S Cherry Sts From John Collins et al for planking, James Street from Front to Second Street. Referred to Street Committee From Fridolin Wilhelm et al for a sewer in Fifth Street between Cherry and James Streets. Refered to Committee on Sewers. Lombard, Payne and Birch Sts Opening of Lombard, Payne & Birch Sts Opening of From Thos Mercer et al for opening Lombard, Payne and Birch Street in Collins addition. Referred To Street Committee [Hose Co #1] admitted to Fire Dept From The Board of the Delegates recommending the admission of "Hose Co No 1" to the Seattle Fire Department. Thereupon said recommendation is approved and said "Hose Co. No. 1" is hereby declared admitted into the Seattle Fire Department. Reports Rec'd Commercial Mill & Front St planking cost of From the Street Commissioner showing the cost of planking Commercial Mill and Front Streets. Report adopted. Cemetary to be fenced. Park approved. From the Cemetary Commission recommending the fencing of the City Cemetary and for certain improvements to the City Park. Ordered that the Clerk be & is hereby instructed to notify said Commission that a fence has heretofore been ordered by the Council for the Cemetary and further ordered that the Committee on Public Buildings, Property and Grounds in connection with said Cemetary Commission be and are instructed to repair the fence around the City Park and to make certain other repairs to said Park grounds. Rollin St Extension From Surveyor reporting progress on Rollin Street Extension ordered that the surveyor be & is hereby instructed to complete the plat of such extension. Moltke St From Street Committee reporting against granting the petition of A.E. Houser et al for opening Moltke Street. Report adopted. Blk 42 draining of From Committee reporting against granting the petition of D.C. Townsend et al for draining Block 42 Hen's S.A. Bell addition.

380 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Feb 3 1888 Communication from E C McClanahan in regard to his claim against the Contractor on the North End of Seventh Stree for hauling lumber, read and referred to the Judiciary Committee. Petition of Charles B Ames and others for grading Birch Street and constructing a five foot sidewalk on both sides of said street from Depot Street to Harrison Street, read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of L M Frye & others for a crossing at the intersection of Sixth Street and Pike Street. Granted. Communication from Seattle Lumber and Commercial Company asking permission to connect a one & one half (1 1/2) inch pipe with a spring in James Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets and conduct the same to the Commercial Mill, read and referred to the Street Committee. Petition of Thomas W Prosch & others for a cross walk on Ninth Street at its intersections with Cherry Street read & tabled for the present. Petition of Thos W Prosch & others for a street light corner of Ninth & Cherry Streets read & tabled as the light has already been ordered. Official Reports Received From the Mayor read & approved & ordered filed From the City Attorney for January read & approved & ordered filed From Justices of the Peace Soderberg & Jones referred to the Finance Committee. From Chief of Police for month of Jany read & ordered filed Fro City Treasurer for month of Jany read & referred to the Finance Committee.

390 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Feb 17 1888 Petition of H L Yesler for correction of assessment read and referred to the Judiciary Committee with power to act. Petition of Sam'l Hunter for permission to erect a wooden building 14x20 in the rear of his store No 924 Front Street, read and granted, said building to be constructed in accordance with the provisions of Ord No 833. Petition of Bernard Campbell for permission to erect a small building at the foot of Spring Street, read and tabled. Petition of Mrs H E Hathaway & F A Churchill for opening alley in Block 50 Terry's 1st add'n read & referred to the Street Committee. Committee Reports Rec'd From Street Committee on petition of Seattle Lumber and Commercial Company for permission to take water from a spring on James Street recommending that the petition be laid on the table as the Spring Hill Water Co had already taken posession of the spring under claim of purchase. adopted. From Same Committee granting petition of Charles B Ames & others for grading and building sidewalks on both sides of Birch Street from Depot Street to Harrison Street and recommending that the City surveyor submit plans and specifications for such improvement. From same Committee rejecting the petition of Henry Peterson for a drain as the Committee think the City had nothing to do with draining petitioner's lot. Adopted.
