" FORT WORTH,TEXAS. Sept 1901 9-18

" TO THE HON. MAYOR AND GENTLEMEN OF THE CITY COUNCIL.

" I have been informed that the war department has ordered that the remains of Major Arnold be taken to San Antonio where a monument will be erected to his honor and memory. As a pioneer of this Country and knowing the history and merits of Major Arnold, the founder of Fort Worth in common with our Citizens I would not only regret, but would feel mortified to see his remains removed from our City. My Brother-in-law Dr. Adalfus Gounah (who was the head of the Icarian Colony) lied with Major Arnold at his quarters while the Fort was kept here and furnished all the timber from his land to build the Fort. Mayor Arnold then established Fort Graham and moved the army to that place and not a great while after the Fort was moved to Graham Major Arnold was shot and killed by the army surgeon and some time thereafter Dr. Gounah has his remains moved to Fort Worth and burried on his land north of the town which is now the old cemetery. Major Arnold was universally admired by all the old setlers of North Texas. He was continually vigilant in protecting their families and property against the Indians. He was a man of culture and military training and loved and admired by all, and I hope that some action will be taken by your Honorable body to keep his remains here, and that a suitable monument will be built to the memory of the noble man who protected those that first plowed the ground and cut the trees and burned the brush and paved the way for you to come.

"Very respectfully.
