Pleurisy

OverviewVersions

Description

An inflammation of the pleura, the thin sheet of tissue that wraps around the outside of the lungs and the inside of the chest cavity. These two layers rub against each other every time the lungs expand to breathe, which is painful when they are inflamed. Infections (bacterial and viral) are the main cause.
