articles. Combined with Rad. Serp. Virg. I believe it to be more
efficacious than when used alone, but in recent rheumatism
pleurasy &c, it is hurtfull. Dr Jackson a graduate in this
Unversaty in 1804 found that when it was applied in the
Jacket impaired the force and frequency of the pulse, and a
disagreeable sensation of heat, and a dryness was evident
in the hands, if left on the patient untill a complete formation
of the paroxysm it never failed to augment its violence, in
100 pure intermittants, I believe the bark would cure 99. It is
sometimes usefull to go in Murcury [mercury] as precede its use in
salivation in some cases of fevers, to conclude I have never
known a physician where confidence has not increased with
his experience in this remidy, we do not know half its
virtues. I have now finished with the bark. But before I
proceed to speak of the mineral tonics I will notice a few
others of the most important vegitable tonics.

Magnolia. Of this there are several species
differing verry little, the taste is intensely bitter with an
aromatic, the colour of a cold infusion does not change
materially by the addition of the sulphate of Iron, its
