and vomiting if given in a liquid form. The Tincture ferri
is made by digesting ℥i [1 ounce] of Iron filings in lbi [1 pound] of Wine,
this sits easy on the stomach the dose is from ℥fs to Ʒi [½ ounce to 1 dram] this
preparation I have not employ’d, and what I think is the
best is the simple rust. Dr Cullen was in the habit of
using this preparation and sometimes to a verry great
extent as ℥ij [2 ounces], it is a most valuable tonic especially in all
cases of debility especially of a cronic nature. I have
commonly given it in small doses as grs V [5 grains] and seldom
more than X [10], three or four times a day, however in some
cases I have found it necessary to persevere in its use, and
have given to the extent of Xij or Xiij [12 or 13] grains; I have used it
in one case of paralysis to the extent of ℥fs [½ ounce] in the 24 hours,
and should the medicine nauseate it will be
convenient and serviceable to combine it with a small quantity
of cinnamon, diseases in which Iron is used.

Intermittants. That Iron is less adapted to
the cure of this disease than the cinchona is not to be denied,
but that some of the preparations of Iron will cure
intermittants there can be no doubt, but it is probably the Iron
