months old it should be given in such doses as to produce slight
degree of nausea = In a child of 4 years old gtt iv [4 drops] would be a
large dose, we should see our little patients frequently as it is a
verry dangerous medicine and should be used with much
caution = I have seen the oxyde prove effectual when the solution
was of no service, the oxyde is administered in the following way

Oxide of Arsenic grs i [1 grain]
Opium grs ij [2 grains]

made into 16 pills 2 of which
are to be given every twenty four hours, this is my favorite medicine
it is not only the best but it is the safest = a combination of opium
with it is a great advantage = Arsenic has often a tendency to
effect the bowels = The opium corrects this = Opium acts here as
it does it combination with sach. sat. If it fails in the cure
of intermittants it is in such cases as have been of long standing
and such as have a tendency to typhus fever, here the bark is
the proper medicine, the arsenic if it is to prove efficacious will
verry soon after three or four doses make a change in the
disease. Dr Fowler says there are cases of intermittants which will
neither yield to bark or arsenic sepperately, the operation of the
arsenic is certainly on the stomach and where cases are spedily made
it more or less debilitates the stomach, though I think that it
