same kind with Ipecacuanha in the proportion of from ¼ to
½ grn [grain] of opium to 1 or 1½ Ipecac at night I frequently give Ipecac
itself or Dovers powders. = In hemorrhages threatening abortion opium
is an excellent remidy = bleeding is often an excellent one but perhaps
the combination of opium is the best. = If the placenta be retained by
the spasm of the uterus opium is an excellent medicine.

Epistaxis. Is generally an active hemorrhage and
therefore opium is improper, combined with Sach. Sat. it is in some cases
usefull in this disease.

Dysentary. Dr Cullen
and hundreds of other practitioners have recommended opium in
dysentary. Dr Cullen thought that it was a precarious remidy and
ought to be avoided if possible from, from his theory we should suppose
the Edinburgh Professor had scarcely witnessed a case of dysentary
so likewise with Dr Heberdeen who was too sparing with our
medicine, he used it only in the last stage of the disease.
Sydenham who was in great practice among the poor of London as well
as the rich has recommended and tells us it always succeeded and
never produced any bad consequence, he began with gentle purges and
opiates at night. Dr Lind who saw this disease affecting armies
and navies asserts that the sooner we use opium the better, will
