Of the Passions

All Passions are reducible to these three
Heads of Admiration, Love & Hatred
Which may be called primitive Passions.

Admeration is that suddent Surprise at the Novelty of
an Object, by which the Soul is fastened
down to the Contemplation of It.

Love is the Gravitation or Weight of the Soul
towards Good

Hatred is an Endevour of the Soul to dis-
united from that which it apprehends to be
evil

of mixet Passions

Ambition is the Passion men have for Grandeur
Admiration & Desire are the two Parts of it.

Glory is made up of Joy Self-love & Esteem

Shame is compounded of Sorrow Self-love with some
Mixture of Contempt

Emulation is a generous And or kindled by the Brave
Examples of Others to intimate to rival and if we
can [?] excell them.
Here is involved in this Passion Esteem of the
Person whome we emulate, of the Qualities
& Actions in Which we [emutale?] with a Joy spri-
nging from the Hope of Success

Horror arises from the Sight of Objects that have some
thing in them vast and frightful
It is compounded of Admiration and Fear and
sometimes with a Mixture of Pleasure
