Small notebook containing notes kept by John Winthrop on sermons he attended between September 1, 1728 and October 19, 1729, while he was an undergraduate at Harvard College. The volume contains one-to-two page entries on specific sermons and provides the biblical text and related doctrines, questions, and conclusions. The inside back cover contains a handwritten index of the minister who gave the sermon, most often Nathaniel Appleton.

how does it argue a want of faith in
Such who suffer distressing fears to rise
within ‘em in time of troubke.
[8?] Let us all be taking his method to get
above [?] fears of Evil in any dark Valley
{that} we are to pass thro: by taking {Christ} to be
our Shepherd, & by giving up our Selves to

1. Before we can pretend to belong to {Christ}
fold, we must be able to say, {that} we hear
his Voice.

Ye then be risen with {Christ}, Seek those
things that are [?], where {Christ}
Sitteth [?] the right hand of God.
1. {Christ}’s rising from the dead was a
Thing foretold before his Suffering
& death.
2. He accordingly arose from the the
dead, & Shewed himself alive by
many infallible marks to his disci-
ples & many others.
3. These holy Apostles & witnesses
of {Christ}’s resurrection, have given the 49.
clearest & fullest testimony that
could be in this manner.
4. Their testimony was confirmed by
the Suffering & Death they under-
went therefor.

true Messiah, the Saviour of the world.
2 Is {Christ} risen from the dead, then the
faith shops of {Christ}ians is upon a
good & sure foundation.
The resurrection of {Christ} assures

ment & {that}{Christ} will be the judge.
3. It also assures of eternal Life
& happiness.
4. Is {Christ} is risen from the dead, let us
endeavor to be comfortable to him, &
to know experimentally the power
of his death.

44. Cambridge August 31st 1729. A. M. By Mr. Cutter from 22 Matthew. 21. Render therefore to Casar the things that are Casar's, & unto God the things that are God's. 1. I shall draw a general plan of our duty. 1. We are first to consider what we are. 2. Whom we are related to, & what the rela= =tion is yt. we stand in to them. 1. We may consider the relation we stand in to God. 1. God is in the first place related to us as he is our Creator. 53 2. We must consider God as our [Preserver?] 3. We are to consider God as our Redeemer. 4. We must consider God as our proper King & Soverign, & ourselves his Subjects. 5. As our most bountiful Benefactor. 2. We may consider the relation we stand in to our Fellow-creatures. a. We shall only consider this general relations, as they are our Fellow-creatures. 3. We shall considered what obligation these Relations lay us under. 1. The first thing we seem to be {obliged} to respecting our Creator, is an uni= =versal Gratitude & thankfulness. 2. A supreme and unshaken Love to God naturally flows from our obligations to him. Let us now consider our duty to our Fellow-Creatures, from this single relation between them & us, [vizt.?] that of fellowCreatures. This consists in an universal Love & benevolence to them. 2. To press the Exhortation in the text, that we discharge our duty, to God & manLet us all then be exhorted to discharge our dutys to others as they result from the relations that are between us.

If ye {[then?]} be risen with +, seek those things that are above, where + sitteth at the right hand of God. 3. +tians especially true belivers may be said to be risen with +. 21. When How may +tians be said to be risen with +? A.1. As they believe and realize the resur= rection of + from the dead. 2. Theay may be said to be risen with +, as at + resurrection they were raised from a lower dispensation to a higher. 3. True Believers may be said to be risen with +, as they vertically rose with him, that is, as by [virtue?] of his res= -urrection they are assured of a resurrection to eternal Life. 4. +tians may be said be risen with Christ, as they are in [?] him raised to a new & Spiritual Life. 2. Every true believer is risen with + to a new & Spiritual Life.

55. 1. They have the Eyes of {[their?]} minds opened, [to?] see new Spiritial things. 2. They have new dispositions & inclina= =tions stirred up in them. 3. Such as are raised with + lead new lives. 4. Such act with new designs, & from new principles. Improvement. 1. From what we have heard, we learn, that multitudes who profess to be risen with +, know nothing of the power of his resurrection. 2. We learn the happy [fate?] of all true Believers, in that they are risen with +. 3. Let us all examine our selves now to see whether we be risen with + or no. 4. Our being risen with +, is an argument for, & a strong obligation on us, to seek those things that are above. [1.?] There are things above. [?] Here it may be understood that there is a glorious place above.

56 2. By things above, we may also understand the company & Society that there is in this high & holy place. 3. We may also understand by the things above, the Exercises & Employments of the heavenly Word. 4. -- the happiness, delights, & joys of the heavenly World. 2. I Shall show what is implyed in our seeking those things that are above.

1. It intends a realizing belief of those things. 2. It also intends our having the highest esteem & Value for them. 3. It intends our using our utmost endeavours, in all proper ways & method, to get an Interest in them.

1. We must be early in our seeking an Interest in them. Psalm. 63.1. 2. We must seek with diligence. 3. We must be constant & persevering in our pursuits of heavenly things. 4. It intends our removing & rejoicing every thing that will hinder our obtaining what we seek for.

57 2. We must lay aside, every sin that besets us & hinders our seeking those things that are above. 5. To seek those things that are above is to comply with these things that qualify us for & give us a Title to them. 6. It intends our readily submitting to every thing in Providence that tends to promote our obtaining of them.

An Old Sermon Cambridge September 7th. P.M. 1729. 47. By Mr. Appleton, from 22. Matth. 5 But they made light of it & went their way, one to his farm, another to his Merchandize

Doct. There are many who make light of the offers & invitations made to them in the Gospel. 2.1. When may persons be Said to make light of the offers in the Gospel? A.1. When we dont esteem them as the best offers that ever were made to the Children of Men. 2. When we dont with all thankfulness & readiness accept of them. 3. When we obstinately refuse to accept them.
