68. great evidence of the truth of the Gospel. 3. If we Should [strikeout] illeg. [strikeout] understand by Water the purity of Christs Disciples, especially the primitive Christians, we shall see an Evidence for the truth of the Gospel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------54. Cambridge. Octr. 12th. [??] 1729. Sabbath. By Mr. Danll. Rogers Senr. from John.13-17. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. Doct.s Both the Knowledge & actual Observance of the Commandments are necessary to obtain Heaven & Happiness. 1. Unless we observe & practice the Commandments we shall never obtain Heaven & Happiness. 2. I Shall consider of [ut.?] necessity it is that we do keep the Commandments. 3. It is absolutely necessary in order to obtain Heaven & Happiness. 4. Obedience to the Commandments is necessary to obtain Heaven as it fits & qualifies us for the Employments & Exercises of that place. 3. We must know our Duty & get acquainted with it. Doct.2 Those who thus know & practice obedience to the Commandments, Shall not fail of Heaven Improvement.

1. Must we know & practice obedience to the Command=ments, what then will become of the wicked, & where will the ungodly & the Sinner appear? 2. What we have heard teaches us that a bare profession of Religion, & taking upon us the names of Christians will not avail us. 3. An external conformity & outward compliance

with the Commandments of God's Law, 69 will not Serve our turn; & obtain for us Life & Happiness. 4. Let us bless God for the revelation of our Duty. Let us be exhorted to keep & obey all God's Commandments. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------55 Cambridge Octr. 19.th A.M. 1729. Sabbath. By Mr. Appleton from 1 John 5.8. There are [??] that bear witness on earth, the Spirit, & the Water & the Blood, & there [3?] agree in 1. 3. What are we to understand by the Blood Spoken of in the Text? [4?] It intends the blood of Christ, which was Shed on the Cross. If we consider it in this Sence, it is a very convincing Evidence for the truth of Christianity. 1. This was of old prophesied of the Messiah Gen. 3.18 Isa. [5.3.?] 2. This Evidence will be very much Strength=ned, if we Consider the remarkable Cir=cumstances that attended his Death. 3. If we consider what a confirmation it is of the truth of his own Testimony. 4. This his dying is an incontestable evidence of his being the Christ. Let us consider the Consequences of his Death, which are 1 His Resurrection from the Dead. 2. God's avenging his Blood upon the Jews, in the Desolations & Destructions he bro't on them 5. The blood of Christ may be considered as an Evidence for the truth of the Gospel, as it gives a fair account of the satisfac=tion made to divine Justice for Sin.

70. 6. The holy peace & joy that arises to a Saint from a firm & steady Belief faith in this Blood, is another Evidence of the truth of it. 2. By the Blood here may be understood also the blood of the Martyrs, wch. is a very convincing Evidence of the truth of the Gospel. 3. By blood, may be understood the Sacramental Blood.

36. Cambridge October 19th. P.M. 1729. Sabbath. By Mr. Appleton from 1 John. 5.2. And there are 3 that bear witness in Earth, the Spirit, the Water, & the Blood, & these 3 agree in one.

Improvement. 1. From the whole we may draw this Conclusion, that the Gospel is certainly true, & that {Christianity} is the [only?] true & Saving Religion. 2. From wt. we have heard, we learn the Wisdom & the Condescension of God in bringing so many inconstestable Evidences to the truth of the Gospel. 3. Are there so many witnesses in Heaven & Earth to the truth of the Gospel, hence learn the unreasonableness of Infidelity. 4. Is the Gospel true, as it most certainly is having such incontestable Evidence for it, then what manner of persons [aught?] we to be in all holy Conversation & Godliness?

71. 5. Let us all see to it that we really believe the truth of the Gospell. 1. We must pray to God to deliver us from an unbelif evil Heart of unbelief. 2. We must observe & check the workings of unbelief in our hearts. 3. We must not be please with, or hastily lay hold of any Objections that are started against the Gospel. 4. Let us be in the diligent practice of the Gospel-Duties, & we Shall find our belief of it growing & encreasing continually.
