Contains an alphabetical "Catalogue of Plants from Doctors Linnous [sic] and Hill," referring to Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and Sir John Hill (1714?-1775), as well as Manasseh Cutler's descriptions of plants in 1783, numbered 100-140, including Indian cucumber (Medeola), pigeon berry (possibly Rivina humilis), and yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). There is an index to plants described in the front of the volume.

Stam — 6 filiform, erect, patent filamt shorter than petals, rising from ye recepticle Anthera oblong 2 deep longitudinal sinuses — perhaps double. erect.

Pistil — Germen within ye Corol — Style none, of else Stigma 3 revolute cylindrical 1/10 inch long — But think upon ye whole — Stiles 3, cylind — revolute — Stigma scarcely perceptable.

Seed Globular berry — credo —

Stalk —

Root — ovate — oblong — 1 1/2 inch long as large as the thumb, esculent — sends milk white, sends of a kind of spur, perfectly white & smooth — in a direct. opposite to ye main root &

103 descending 1/2 inch long — The stalk of ye size of a straw of flax, 12 or 18 inch high, round smooth hard, having a very fine soft woolly substance thinly adhere scattered & lightly adhering to it.

Leaves — no radical leaves, & ye stalk rises [bare?] some distance, where then stands from 5 to 10 beautiful oblong, doubly acuminated Leaves 2 or 4, nervose — ribs with many small anatomizing small veins runing from rib to rib. The leaves have no pedicles, & stand in a stellate, form — & spreading — At ye top is a nother similar set of similar stellate leaves, but less in No. & of unequal size. Some times there are to set of stellal leaves below ye top — From ye ala of ye top leaves rises 5 or 6 flowers short on short pedicles which are reflected dowwards between ye leaves on which are ye flowers hanging dowards under ye leaves with their disks nearly perpendicular — The flowers very small —

The plant hath its name from ye root, which some wt tast of a Cucumber & is very agreeable.

104 June 16th No. 139 — Four flowered Stellate or Cross leaved Plant —

Calyx — parminant, perianth, — 5 slender, acuminated, patent, segts

Corol — a single rotated petal — of 5 ovate large segts (Nectaria — red spots round ye tube —) Bright yellow, slightly streaked or clouded with fine short red strokes.

Stam — 5 subulated connivent filaments 2 of ym longer & 2 shorter, ye odd one between ye 4. but not much difference in ye hight — Anthera oblong erect — com= pressed, slightly emerginated — opens in 2 cells — The filaments seem to rise in a kind of tube, or have broad bases & very strongly adhere. 3 of ym are commonly of a length — 2 only shorter — tube inserted into recep. & coverg. Germen.

Pistil. Germen roundish, with in ye Cup — Style filiform of ye length of ye

Branch Stalk — round, fine short hairs 1 1/2 feet high — erect — Leaves stand on ye Stalk inform of cross — on very short pedicles, ovate — The Crosses about an inch distant all ye way up ye stalk —

The flowers stand single on very long slender pedicles arising from ye cut ala of each leaf — being 4 flowers in each Cross — Flowers of yellow — Grows in open dry woodland.

106 June 16th No. 140 — Stinking Vine — Either Pentand or Hexand — or else of ye Monoecia or Dioecia

Calyx — Perianth. rotate, with 6 — oblong, reflex segments, every other wider than the other & widest. Nearly inveted ovate. of a lihgreeen light green colour.

Corol — None, unless ye Calyx be a corrol — which I should have no doubt of A only that ye petals are green —

Stam. Usually 6 — some times but 5. — subulated filaments, patent — stand irrigular, on sides or under ye Germen, rather — shorter yn petals — Anthera capitate — or They seem to be ye continuance of ye filaments — & very different from any I have seen — & yet seem to discharge polen —

Stigma — There is no germen, nor any any Style nor stigma — discernable — the filaments seem to rise up from ye
