19 Meadow Blubells is a Gentiana & it shd seem yt Linn. regards as a variety of Gentia ciliata [Gentiana ciliata]. (Vid. p. 1) I am however of opinion yt it is a different species. Shall we call it G. simbricata corollis [Gentiana imbricata?] 4 fides, luciniis apise ciliatis. I would characterize cor The G. ciliata I wd characterize. G. ciliata. cor. 4 sid. laciniis basi ciliatis.
No. 38. Sent June 89 is not ye same plant with No.4 of yr preceed'. parcell wh I have considered as Osmunda Virg. [Osmunda virginia] — but most probably on ye ripe frutificatos of O. struthiopt. [Osmunda struthiopteris] Vide. p.
Corylus Avellana (long shelled) is C. rostrata [Corylus rostrata]. Solander in Hort. Kew iii. 364. Do both grow wild & have you any other species? or Varieties wild or cultivated? —
Dracontium latidum. Wt. Linn. you see judiciously suspected wd. prove a Pothos. I have compared yours with Catesby & resolved to call it — Pothos foetida [Pothos foetidus], as ye plant has fol. cordata [Pothos foliis cordata]. 20 You did well to place it in Tetrandria, where it ought undoubtedly to remain as ye whole genus Pothos. I wish for leaves & flowers — as ye seeds did not vegetate. If you compare Linn. discript=tion Pothos. Arum. Calla with ye plants then Selva you will find he places them in Gynandra. bie: ye Stam & pistl. are found on ye same receptacle But at head of ye Clas his Gen. Observ. is Potuis non etc — He should have done so.

A New Grass Agrostis cornucopea [Agrostis cornucopiae], From wh. Walter Auth. Fl. Carol. wh he gives title Cornucopea perennans [Cornucopia perennans]. p. 74. is as growing now in my Garden — not so green as other grasses — Seeds sold at an enormous price.
Linnaea borealis. I know only of ye species. I should be glad to see its fruit. —

I propose adding to ye Chr. in Hort — Kew. I call it C. dilatatum [Cypripedium dilatatum], Cu : ye open. of ye Nect. extends almost to ye end of it. Have you ever found B. of Linn. wh is fig. in Cates. ii. t.73? If you have ever found Cates. t.ii t.72. I wd. propose to call it C. lipsum [Cypripedium ipusm?] petulis longiori. nectarai perhaps sufficient sp. char.
Bignonia. Mem. Acad. is probably B. Semper. [Bignonia sempervirens] ye leaves of wh are deciduous. —
Cassine. Wt is ye Cassina in M. Acad. I shall be much obliged to you for a specm. As also wt is called South Seas Tea. Cassina Paragua [Cassine paragua] of Marsh., as also as many medical plants as possible. Poly
Polygala — supposed N.Sp. of 1st. collect. is I suppose Polygalia of Mem. Acad. 470. I call it P. monspeliaca [Polygala monspeliaca], with a note of doubt, as J [Bauhin's?] [Polygala buchanani] fig. has much larger fruit — & as ye capsules as described as membranes — suppose we call it elon= =gata [Polygala elongata] answered to ye Eng. Name long spike It is most nearly allied to P. paniculata [Polygala paniculata]

Lonicera Diervilla [Diervilla lonicera?] — is ye Plant with a branch of another Species of Lonicera glued to it. Wt. species I can not ascertain for want of leaves.
Amr. Tea Ceonoth. Amr. [Ceanothus americanus] already agreed —
Indigofera glabra is Sophora tinctoria. Helianthus divaricatus. Ageratum iliare of ye 1st pack. appears to be Coreopsis coronata Lobelia cardinalis. of ye 1st packet — Lobelia — supposed N.Sp. seems to me to be L. inflata [Lobelia inflata]. Lathirus tuberosus [Lathyrus tuberosus] of 1st packet — & M. Acad. appears to me to be Pisum marit. [Pisum maritimum].
Rudbeckia, wh by mistake I called Gnaph. Amer. [Gnaphalium americanum] is G. margaritaceum [Gnaphalium margaritaceum]. I called it Amer. from ye English name given by us who cultivated it in our flower gardens borders as you appear to do. Was ye spm. a wild or cultivated one? I cannot find any perfect seeds in your

23 your specm. or in my living ones. The error Amern. is committed in Bot. Arrgt p. 894.
Aralia — of wh you sent me large spcm & a smaller Var. both with[out] flowers is aralia Ano= =ther delicate one of ye is same tribe is A. trifol. [Aralia trifolia] (ye a looks like P. & just above Panax 5 fol. is [emassed?] — he may mean Panax trifol. [Panax trifolius] can ye spotted var. be a Panax? Cutler) Another Aralia is A. racemosa [Aralia racemosa], as I see I have written on ye label, [consequently?] have said so in some of my letters.
Cutleria — A plant like a woolly heath & wh I wished to call Cutleria ericoides turns out to be Hudsonia ericoides. I hope, however, your herborisaitons may furnish a new genus for you not likely to be disturbed as Solander's [Hopen astomia?], My Stokesia cyama is like a Centaurea montana.
