Dear Doctor;

Your good letters have arrived right on the dot. I am
pleased that you can keep up such a schedule, knowing
as I do that you have quite a lot on your mind lately.

I feel somewhat depressed that your mother is not mak-
ing a speedy recovery from her accident. I cannot be of
any assistance. My prayers do not seem to help matters.

You were probably the "bright little mouse" who sat
in the front row at school and always knew the answers.
I was brought up according to the beliefs of Daniel Boone's [day.?]
School was so much nonsense - a waste of time etc. I am
thankful I was able to learn as much as I did! I had
Miss Rice send me Math book for self study - one of these
new modern, simplified - affairs. It teaches rapidly. Already I
can work square & cube root like an old hand.

Miss Rice visited me Saturday the 7th. She was some
what alarmed at my 215 pounds and does not approve. That
will give you some idea as to who will carry the "most weight"
around Hill Top. Almost twice as big as you. Miss Rice came
looking very pert in a new bright blouse (Other things too of course)
I guess it costs a lot of money to live these days. The blouse
cost lots of money, and yet the person who actually made it
probably has to pinch and scrape in order to eat.

I received a book "Five acres and Independence" from Miss [R?].
