REFORMATORY FOR WOMEN MAY 10 1944 FRAMINGHAM
Dear Dr Van Waters
I have your letter, it seems you have had a busy time these spring weeks. In your work - there is always pressure - from every side: I know, so if you do not write frequently - be assured that I understand . To me there is a bond between us much stronger than letters - or even personal presence - An invisible link - based on faith. and friendship - and devotion: It will not break - easy.
It is nice to know that Russell is carrying on. It is also interesting to hear that he holds no bitterness. This is

unusal - the days - the months - the years. He must have plenty within himself. For you - as well as for him - I shall pray for his rescue.
I am working in Hearn's department store 5th Ave at 14th. I am on the service desk taking care of charges and refunds - 5 day week $20 to start 0 with taxes etc. deducted : It is alright for a start - as it is not strenuous. My health is very improved - eyes included. I saw Lt. Colonel McKernan a few day ago. She said - she also knows the Supt. Edna Mahan, that you spoke of. I am interested in getting a farm job - it is good for me to be outside - so when you have a chance - I shall be happy to have you write your friend. If she has nothing - I will try another. It would be only for a few months.
There is [so?] spring as lovely as in New England - but we can gather and renew our strength from it wherever we are
Try us - try me !
That we too might gather hope and strength an beauty -

Did you plant any [A?]?- perhaps the soil near the rock was not of its liking -
Do take care of yourself as we need you - all of us.
I am finishing this over my lunch hour - we have an hour - also 20 min. laterrelaxation. If you see Ann Markey - tell her I shall write her soon - and I hope she too - has recovered -
Ever yours, Lucille.
