REFORMATORY FOR WOMEN APR [?] 1942 FRAMINGHAM [stamp]

File

Dear Dr. Van Waters -

Returned to Springfield this week to stay for a short time - that is unless I find a defense job here. Understand they are giving a course for women in defense work. If I can take this, I may do so. There are many ways one can help. You understand of course that I definetly decided never to return to nursing. I rather know when I am licked - or is it a coward that I am?

Have been so sorry that I could not keep the appointment at Penn. Hotel. The letter arrived to me too late. They held it at the club a few days and then sent

it to my new address. Had they forwarded it at once I would have received it on time to at least phone you. It would have been great to talk with you again - it has been so long. Do hope another opportunity will arrive in the near future.

As for me - my health is grand. Have gained weight - 142 lbs now - and mother tells me she has not seen me look so well in years. That is a battle won anyway. If I get some work where I can feel that I am needed and contributing something - I shall be very happy.

I have a mental picture of your Framingham in the spring - brown earth - [low?] blue sky - wind thru the pines. It is one of the loveliest spots in N. England. and you belong there.

All shapes and sounds, have sothing which is not of them A spirit [broods?] - [mid?] the grass Grave outlines of an everlasting thought - Lie in the very shadows as they pass -

That is a quotation from the poem Oh Earth!

So happy to hear that your mother is well and busy. If she is holding Biography Class - tell her the review of the book Pied Piper by Nevil Shute in April. Readers Digest - might interest the girls. It

is a beautiful story - so human.

Shall write you my next move on the block - the past few months I seem to have been going no-where fast - where work was concerned. Don't mind telling you - I tried everyhing - and enjoyed it - Did just about manage to keep the wolf from the door - thou I saw his shadow many times.

Do write me if you think it wise to give up my profession. If I can get a defense position - don't you think I shall be helping just as much?

A Happy Easter to you and your family.

Ever Yours Lucille
