Cambridge.
May 12 —
Weather very cold and rainy.
Hail and sleet today. The
leaves find it very hard to come
out. Few trees have yet begun.
The horse-chestnut and maples
and lindens have begun.
Hersey Locke gave me some
fruit and stems of the
fruit and stems of the
Liquidambar styraciflua,
from New Jersey. The fruit
which is compound is very
interesting. I am teaching
now a class in Botany for
College and on Fridays, I
have an hour's talk with
the [IV, V, & VI] Class on Botany.
The Dog tooth Violests and Colum-
bine are out, thought I haven't
seen them. ———

Cambridge —
May 15th —
The sun came out just before
sunset, the first time it has
been visible for 5 days. A cold
easterly storm has kept every-
thing in the shape of vegeta-
tion back. The elms & oaks are
bare and even the horse chest-
nuts have not explanded their
leaves. After dinner I went
up to mother's and got a
specimen of Lamium am-
plexicaule which was near
the grape-vine. The Ranun-
culus bulbosus up though
not much developed yet.
