very soon. At Waverly I
found the Erythronium ameri-
canum out in large numbers.
I secured 3 specimens with
the bulb. I found it rather
difficult to get the plant
up with the bulb which is
nearly 6 in. below the ground
and separates from the sheath-
ing leaves & scape very easily.
I also got an Anemone
nemorosa and Viola cuculla-
ta. I found the Trillium
& Arisaema coming up
also the Osmunda clay=
toniana ———

May 18 — Cambridge
Snow and hail today. Never
was there so backward a spring.
The only tree with an appearance
of green is the horse chestnut
and in that tree the leaflets
have not yet expanded. The
weather is cold and chilly.

A change in the weather!
To-day has been warm and
bright with the sun out most
of the time. We have scarcely
seen the sun for 10 days with
the exception of last Tuesday
the 16th. I have been off
botanizing three times to-days
and have secured the following
specimens which I have
put into my press —
