1927

On Jan. 25th the Garden Club met with Mrs. Ralph Parker. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mrs. Taylor repeated that the school grounds Committee had conferred with Mrs. Ransom about preserving the dogwood trees at the Ray St. school, which had been ordered cut down by some of the school authorities. Mr. Andrews and Mrs. Tomlinson are going over the grounds and care will be taken to preserve them.

A motion was carried instructing our Treas. to pay our State dues $2.50 at earliest convenience. It was suggested that pro. committee see if they could secure Mrs. B. Craven to come before our club again. Mr. John Blair, and Mrs. Tilbitt of Samarcand Manor were also suggested as possible speakers. It was announced that Mrs. R. F. J. Johnson of Oak Hill School will be glad of any shrubs or plants suitable for school grounds. This was left in hands of school grounds Com. Mrs. A. E. Tate told of the splendid results from her immense gladiola bulbs, emphasizing the idea that one gets best results from large bulbs.

For the program: Biennials by Mrs. Henry White Annuals paper prepared by Mrs. Terry and read by Mrs. White. Both papers were most helpful. A round table

discussion followed. Mrs. White suggested a full discussion of snap dragons at some following meeting.

Meeting adjourned to meet with Mrs. J. E. Kirkman Feb. 8th.

The Garden Club met Feb. 8th at the Country Club sharing our program with the Midweek Garden Club. The pres. called the meeting to order and after expressing delight over program for morning, turned the meeting over to Mrs. Clark, Chrm. of pro. committee.

Mrs. Allred sang two very appropriate selections.

Mrs. Slane gave us two readings, "The Catalog Garden" and "Hollyhocks" both by Guest.

Then our speaker for morning Mr. John Blair was introduced by Mrs. J. D. Cox. Mr. Blair suggested making our town and highways more beautiful by the use of shrubs and trees. He then gave a most interesting illustrated lecture using slides from scenes of nature.

Mrs. J. E. Kirkman was hostess to the H. P. Garden Club, Feb 22. Minutes of last meeting were read and approved.

Mrs. Clark reported that the Flower Show Com. was working on plans for show, but had no definite plans to present.

Mrs. Taylor reported that she had been asked to help move some of the shrubery from the front to the Hamilton St. side of Ray St. School, thus beautifying another side of the school bldg. A motion carried that a member from the Zoning Com. be invited to come before our Club at next meeting and explain the plans of the new St. to be opened out to the High School. The idea being to preserve the lovely row of cedar trees on each side of Jones St.

After much discussion on efforts to beautify our school grounds it was moved and carried that $25.00 be appropriated from our treasury to be used by the School Grounds Com. as they deem wise in beautyfying the S. grounds especially Oak Hill & [Mechanicsville].

The treasurer reported that the State dues ($2.50) had been paid to Mrs. Tate, State Treasurer. She also mentioned that fact that not all dues for year had not been paid and some had not yet paid for luncheon at the State meeting last fall.

A suggestion was made that some of the School Grounds Com. meet with Parent-Teachers meeting at Oak Hill and arouse interect in beautyfying their
