[[McCall's]] October 1940

Marbled Brownies
Cream together 1 cup shortening &
2 cups sugar. Add 4 eggs, singley
beating after each. Sift 2 cups
flour, ½ tsp. salt, add. Then add
1 ½ tsp. vanilla, 2 cups chopped
walnuts. Divide batter in half.
Melt over hot water 2 squares
(2 oz.) unsweetened choc; add to
half batter. Place batters by alternate
spoonfuls in greased pan 8x8x2"
Bake in moderate oven 350° F. 1¼ hrs.
Cool. Frost some with creamy
fudge + others with confectioners
sugar. Frosting + top with walnut
half.
Confectioners Sugar Frosting
1 tbsp butter, ½ cup confectioners
sugar, milk, ½ tsp. vanilla.
Cream butter, add sugar, gradually
add enough milk to bring mixture
to right consistency for spreading.
Add vanilla. Makes enough to
frost 8x4" surface.
