& yesterday they went to Horace's - do not
think he is smashed - for the old folks
laid the plans - which he seemed to submit
to, with the utmost cheerfulness - she is
a pretty girl, not perfectly easy, perhaps owing
to diffidence - they called on Vienna on
their way - her hand is conciderably im-
proved, so that she does not keep it wrapped
up & uses it some - D. & V. have gone to
Morristown & expect to call on their way
back - Perley's men seem to skedad-
dle very rapidly, Caleb Ormsbe, Edson Slayton
Eddy Foster & Wilber Templeton have all come
home sick - Horace Steward saw George Brown yes-
terday - his health is good, but he says there
is not money enough to induce him to
stay there - he did not fancy, as they
passed through a place - being called a
nigger driver - Sarah Steward has not
yet returned - Dexter is better but he is not
willing she should come without him &
they had not been able to get his discharge
when I last heard - The co. is still at
the east village - Capt. Lewis Coburn seems

to be much thought of - he had them
drawn up in front of Hammett's
[piazza?] and gave them a strong temperance
lecture - Michael sitting by - it is said
to have had a good effect on them -

Mariah's necessity for using a cane
seems to be owing to weakness, induced
by her long sickness - she says she is not
lame - We have had very
changable weather for a month past -
it has been oppressively warm & very
soon cold enough for frosts - with a
good deal of rain - corn is yet much
of it quite green - potatoes rotting badly
cucumbers scarce as we have had frost
every month - Spaffords Cath-
arine is in very poor health & I think
suffers very much - Mary does the work
& appears to take care of her mother very
kindly - Henry goes to school - says
Charles keeps a good one - had twenty five
scholars the 3rd day - Uncle Timothy
is not as well - he is more deranged - so
