My Precious:

I tried to get time to
write you at the Capitol, but did
not get to, so I brought this paper
to my room, and will have to
use a pencil. I know you rather
have a pencil letter than no letter.

Well we had a great day for the
Inauguration. Mr. and Mrs. Townsend and
Mr. Young and I went to the Reception.
I don't know when I ever laughed so
much. It was packed something and
there must have been a quarter of a
mill to shake hands with. We went
to the Ball for a little while. It was
crowded so you could not see any-
thing. The women's dresses were awful
and some of the boys said that
they saw lots of women being [brought?]
in the [????????] late, drunk.
