My darling wife,
My temperature has been normal
all day today and I went outside the
house for the first time since the
19th. I have apparently had flu. I
was moderately sick at first and
have been rather uncomfortable.
Now I am much better. I hope that
my Christmas letter got to you sometime
around Christmad Day. However, if was
so late getting off that I imagine
it will be close to New Year's Day
getting to you. Today was unquestionably
the unhappiest X-mas I have ever
spent. I can imagine X-mas under
circumstances even less happy but pray
that I never see this. I gave all my
presents to the men most of whom
had gotten nothing. Mostly I had just food
but altogether there were about 10 fruitcakes.
X-max dinner at "H" Co was fair. We had
turkey- fresh not hash. This afternoon I
was very restless and roamed all over the
place. There is practically no one left with
whom I am congenial so I have felt
lost. Tonight I went up to the officer's
clup hoping to write a couple of letters. The
walls of my little room have been
moving in on me after so long a time.
It was impossible to do any writing
