135 The Temperance cause is fast growing more popular. There are three societies established in this place for the promotion of Temperance, two of which are on the principle of total abstinence from all intoxicating liquor, excepted for medicinal purposes. One is called the young mens total abstinence society. The other call the total abstinence society & co.

25. 2 A Temperance mtg. was held at Friends Meeting house on Main Street, at which a general invitation was given to all the Societys & the public in general. The house was nearly full above and below, supposed to exceed 1000 people. Four addresses were read & many pertinent remarks made and great attention was paid to all that was said & on the whole it was a good servicable meeting.

2nd 3 mo A Temperance mtg. was held this evening by the new established Society for the southern district

The French on receiving the Presidents Message were exceedingly exasperated, the menaces & threats against that Nation was such, as arroused [AROUSED] the feeling of the people & caused them to manifest a War attitude immediately, & showed a readiness to commence hostilities with this country, if the language of the Presidents message was the voice of the Government. This news when it arrived in this country, was as shocking & appaling [APPALLING] to the people generally as could be immagined [IMAGINED]
