1835 2mo There were a few who were ready to join the President in his measures, be they what they may. This news from France produced an almost an intire stagnation to the commercial concerns of the country. The people of this place seemed more affected than most other places in the U. States. Seventy Ships at sea & many of them not expected in a less time than two or three years. And those who had children & parents at sea were under serious apprehensions for their safety.

2nd 3 mo This country is still in a state of gloomy uncertainty, not knowing in what manner the difficulty will terminate, whether in a War, or the compliance on the part of the French Government with their engagements to pay our Government what they have agreed to. By the latest accounts from France it appears they do not want a War with America. They want to know if Jacksons message is to be understood as the voice of the people. That it is probable a War will be the result.

4mo 15th Repeated accounts is received from France by which it appears that a great majority are in favour of paying the indemnity & opposed to War. The subject was expected would be tried in a short time. 5m/o News has arrived in New York from France the subject of difference between our Government & France has terminated favourable to this country by a Majority in the Chamber of Deputies of 105. Wherein they at length have agreed to pay to our Government 25,000000, which has produced great animation to the people of this country. Business in consequence has become brisk to all classes & particularly to the whalemen.
