The number of the students attending Queen's during the session of 1888-89 was as follows,

Previous to the commencement of the session, the appointments to the two new chairs in Queen's were made.
At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees called on September 18th, the Committee specially appointed to receive applications for the Chairs of English Literature and Language and of French and German Literature and Languages, recommended Mr. James Cappon of Glasgow, Scotland, for the first, and for the second, either Dr. John MacGillivray of Canada, or Mr. Frederic Spencer of Cambridge, Eng.
After consideration of the respective claims of the applicants, Mr. Cappon was elected to the Chair of English, and Dr. MacGillivray to the Chair of French and German, at a salary of $2000 per amum, their duties to commence on the 1st of October
