short speech -- saying that he hoped his fate would be a
warning to all boys to keep clear of the whisky shops -- I
was sorry indeed for him -- I could not stand to stay & see
the horrid sight -- I hastily got out and left -- As I got
around the corner, I heard the drop fall, & looking over the
fences, I saw the four black heads revolving slowly around --
a shocking sight --

At the funeral of Jesse Dickson our brass band performed
its first duties on any public occasion-; we played the
beautifully solemn funeral dirge "Adeste fideles"-; a great
many of those present were weeping.

In August of this year, I received a visit from the Rev. the E. L. T.
Blake of Tallahassee-; he was a lovely man -- I was much
attached to him -- We played chess together a good deal-; as
we were sitting at a game during this visit, I had a call to
visit Rev. E. J. Williams the minister of the Presbyterian
Church, who was taken most violenetly & alarmingly sick, with
erysipelas in the head-; which spread with great rapidity --
after a violent sickness of 2 or 3 days, he died-; he was a
Godly man-; had a lovely family -- I was employed as his
physician much to the indignation of good old Dr Davidson of
his flock, who was very much put out at being neglected for
me -- This attack of erysipelas was so malignant & over-
whelming, that if Mr W. sank under it very rapidly -- the disease
went in to the brain; & he soon became unconscious, and died
on Wednesday (I think) when I was first sent for on Monday --
