a member of the senior class was asked by Dr Woods some question
in relation to an act of indiscretion to which the student
declined giving a definite answer the consequence was that
the faculty refused him pro Tem. license to preach. He
instead of coming and asking pardon leaves town without
permission, a second offense. He then applied for license
to another association; a third offense. He was called back
at the commencement of this term to attend the duties of the
seminary and did not come; a fourth offense. He applied
to this church for a letter of dismission, and was refused; this
church held a series of meetings which suspended almost
all business for eight days when the vote being called for
the students who were members of the church, voted half for
and half against him; the faculty of course voted against him
his letter was refused, I have not time to explain, but he has
slipped his [?] after all: according to the provisions made
in the Cambridge Platform he has since given notice to this
church that he withdraws from it altogether. At the same time
he goes to his native town to the minister and church to which
he first belonged and told the whole story. They having the fullest
confidence in his christian character reexamined him for
the church and he was admitted and commenced with them
last Sabbath. Thus ends the whole business. Our term continues
only about five weeks longer and I am in great doubt whether
to go to New Haven or stay here. I rather think I shall go. If I should
perhaps it would be judged best by you to carry that money rather
than to send it by mail. There may be a motive for so doing as it
is possible I shall want some of it. If I do I expect to make you good
for your loss of interest. I have not heard from home since I left
