The names of several strong, well-known men in the prime
[of] life, and of extended academic experience were
mentioned. After long and frank debate, a ballot was
taken to ascertain the mind of the Board, when it
was found to be practically unanimous in favor of the
Rev. D.M. Gordon, D.D., Professor of Theology in Pine Hill
College, Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was then agreed,
without further formal action, that the Chancellor
[?] empowered to offer the Principal-ship to Dr. Gordon,
with the assurance that the Board would ratify
[the] appointment, should Dr. Gordon signify his willing-
ness to accept.
The Board adjourned to meet again on the 5th Dec 1902.
The Board being met at this date, and a few formal
[s]tems being disposed of, the following memo from the
Chancellor was received and ordered to be put on the
record:
At the last meeting of the Board, held Nov 6th, the
trustees present were pleased to associate the
name of the Chancellor with the completion of the Pacific
Cable. The Chancellor gratefully appreciates the
kind and complimentary minute which they have
caused to be placed on record, in respect, chiefly
to what little he has done to unite Canada telegraphically
with Australia and New Zealand. The good opinion
