turies and a half, is still to be seen in the Chapter house of Westminster, in the Imperial metropolis. The illustrious countryman of many of us, David Hume, describes this ancient record as the most valuable piece of antiquity possessed by any nation." Its existence at this date is a proof that when care is bestowed upon papers of value they are not perishable. A volume of this character would contain with the names of our Benefactors, a record of specially important events in connection with the institution. Its history would be written year by year, and it would not be an unimportant part of the duty of the Trustees to

observe annually that the years history had been faithfully inscribed."

At their first meeting after Convocation the Trustees resolved to proceed with the establishment of the Domesday Book of this University and they appointed a committee to carry their wishes into effect.

It is therefore the design in the following pages to narrate the origin of the University - and inscribe its annals year by year. In this memorial volume the Trustees desire gratefully to put on record and hand down to posterity the names of those by whom, from time to time, it has been aided and endowed.

The record of the history of the University for the first fifty years has been intrusted to the venerable Dr. Williamson whose clear memory and identification with the fortune of Queen's since the year 1842 distinguish him as singularly well fitted for the task.

Dr Williamson wrote the annals to the close of Session 1877-8. His death, September 26th, 1895, prevented him from finishing the work. It was resumed by Miss Lois Saunders, the Librarian, and completed to the close of the XIXth Century.

The synod of the Presbyterian Church for Canada in connection with the Church of Scottland, was first constituted in St. Andrew's Church, Kingston, in 1831, and in the following Extract from the minutes of its next meeting in the same place on 2nd August, 1832, we find the first step taken with a view to the establishment of the college: -

"The synod proceeded to the consideration of a reference from the Presbytery of York respecting King's College, York, and an overture from the Rev. William Rintoul on the training of young men for the ministry in connection with the Synod, in susbtance as follows: 'It is humbly
