support of an academical institution for the eduation of youth. This draft was amended and then unanimously agreed to. Full authority and instructions were given to the Commission to cause a Bill in conformity with said draft to be introduced into the Legislature of Upper Canada at next session thereof."

"It was resolved for a large majority of votes that Kingston be the site of said institution, and that it would be designated as the Scottish Presbyterian College'."

"The Synod further authorized and enjoined the commission to proceed with all diligence, and in such manner as they may deem best, in obtaining contributions for the establishment and support of the college,

and to appoint such agent or agents as they shall see proper for this purpose."

"The Synod in accordance with a recommendation of this report, agreed to record their great satisfaction with the assiduity, and progress in study of the young men studying under the superintendence of the Presbytery of Hamilton, and under the tuition of Mr. John Rae, Master of the Gore District School, and directed that Presbytery to continue their superintendence of the studies of these young men, adhering as closely as circumstances will permit to the plan of Theological Education, prepared by the Committee appointed for the purpose at last Synod, as also the Presbytery of Kingston, to aid, encourage and direct in their studies the young ment received by them, as candidates for the Ministry, according to the

The Commission of Synod accordingly appointed a committee to watch over the progress in the Legislature of the Act of Incorporation. An adjourned meeting of the Commission met at Hamilton on the 8th October, 1839, "approved of in substance and ordered to be revised and printed, the draft of a circular addressed to the church and community at large in this province, setting forth the intentions of the Synod in regard to the establishment of a college and the claims which this object has on their liberal support." letter above referred to, addressed "to the friends of the Presbyterian Church in Canada," and signed by tbe Moderator of Synod, was issued on 5th December, 1839, from which the following is an extract:-

"Commencing upon a small scale we shall escape the folly of outrunning our means upon the one hand, and on the other of creating an establishment beyond the actual wants of the community. We should esteem either of these a preposterous indiscretion, which would soon involve us in great embarrassments, and undermine that public confidence on which our success depends. Our method will therefore be to provide only for our present and actual wants, on a plan that will easily admit of enlargement with the growing
