Orders for Chief and other Petty Officers

The Chief Gunners Mate and the Gunners Mate are to take turns in stopping on board at night except on Saturdays Sundays and General Holidays to superintend the cleaning in connection with the Guns and the issue of any stores, Gunners, that may be required.

When there is a class of Naval Reserve men under instruction ans either or both are ins tructing, they are not to be required to turn out in the morning to superintend the clean ing of the Gun gear ec. but they are to take their turn in stopping on board in case their services are required.

The Signalman is to be instructed in the use of the electric light and also how to flash with it.

The Signalman is to Muster and be res ponsible for the Signal Books issued.

The title of Engine Room Artificer is to be altered to Engineer Artificer.

Weather permitting the night signalling instruction (especially the Morse Code) is to be regularly carried out on Friday Evenings.

22 Orders for Chief and other Petty Officers

A. Signal Boy, is to go on shore on Friday Afternoon to clean and trim the lamp.

Until the Signal boys are more Expert they are in addition to be excercised for an hour on board the ship each night the Signal man is on board.

The Petty Officer employed about the Life Saving appliances is, when onboard to assist in cleaning Ship, guns, xc. and attend drills working at the Life saving appliances if required when not so employed. At sea he is to work with his watch.

The Captains Coxwain when not required by the Captain is to work with the Gunner always provided the Galley has been cleaned out which he is to do during the time of cleaning ship.

At sea he is to work with his watch.

The Quarter Masters. 25 They are in harbour to consider them selves in charge of the deck as Officers of the watch and not to allow any irregular ities, or disobedience of the orders of the ships.

They are to keep their watch strictly and not to leave the upper deck except to make reports, to the Captain executive Officer, to go the rounds at night time and trim the lamps.

They are at all times day and night to pay particular attention to the safety of the ship.

If at Single anchor that she is riding secure to her anchor.

If moored that the Hawse is if possible kept clear with the Helm. If secured to a Buoy that the Buoy is kept clear of the Bows. At night he is to call the Commanding Officer if he has the slightest suspicion that the ship is not in every way all right. That the Anchor Buoy if one, is watching and does not re quire bleeding. That the Anchor light burns brightly, trimming it as requisite.

26 The Quarter Masters That position lights are always hoisted and hauled down when requisite, such as the arrival and departure of Men of War after dark. When lying in the river a light is to be hoisted at the Ensign staff between Sunset and Sunrise in addition to the Forestay light and in case of a fog the foghorn is to be sounded on the approach of any vessel.

When alongside a wharf: 1st A light is to be kept at the Gangway during the night. 2nd They are to be most careful that the sponsons or Guns do not catch under the wharf with the rise and fall of the tide and also that there is sufficient play with the larh ings. While on the Slip: The waterhose is to be led on board every [morning] Evening the Quarter Masters acquain ting themselves where the turncock is. They are to go the rounds every hour after 9 p.m. until the hands are turned up in the mor ning reporting at once any serious irregularity to the executive Officer. They will visit prisoners in the cells once every watch during the night and on the prisoner taking exercise they will see that he commun icates with no one and that the Sentry walks the opposite side of the deck to the prisoner.

The Quarter Masters 27 All men excepting Petty Officers are to be ins pected on returning from leave but they are not to be searched unless there is good cause for suspicion. The Senior Quarter Master on board will do the duty of the Master at Arms during the Master at Arms absence from the Ship on leave or on duty. On days on which the Ships company are on General leave the Quarter Master of the morning watch is to make certain before the Officer of the previous night goes on shore that the chronometers have been wound up. The Senior Quarter Master is responsible to the Second Lieutenant that the Quarter Masters gear is in an efficient state and that on going to sea, everything is in readiness, such as leads, aprons, log lines, and Glass measured, Binnacle lights trim med, Wheel tried xe.

On going in or out of harbour two Quarter masters are to attend, one the [coan] the other the routine xe. They are to be particu lar that the men on the upper deck are at all times properly dressed in accordance with the regulations laid down. They are not to allow men to lay down on the upper deck during working hours or at any time in the sun, during the summer months.
