The Discipline

In the event of the ships company having any request or complaint to make, they are to do so through the Petty Officer of the day and the master of arms to thr Executive Officer.

The Punishment for wilfully overstaying leave will be

A. Pay. For the first 24 hours. 1. One days pay, for every six hours or part of six hours absence. 2nd. After 24 hours One days pay for every additional twelve hours or part of twelve hours absence.

B. Leave. One turn of Leave for every six hours, or part of six hours absence. If the leave is for a longer period than 24 hours, every 24 hours or part of 24 hours is he [emtidered?] a turn.

You quitting ship, Boat, working party or other duty: One turn of leave for every hour or part of hour of improper absence.

For returning from leave unfit in consequence of intemperance One turn of leave for every six hours or part of six hours they may be unfit.

46 The Discipline

By turn of leave is to be understood each time that a man is deprived of the indul gence, which he would have been allowed had he not been under stoppage.

After 24 hours of a man absent without leave the Master at Arms is to go on shore and if possible ascertain the mans whereabouts and bring him on board calling in the assist ance of the police if necessary.

After 48 hours absence a warrant will be issued for the mans arrest and one pound reward will be given.

When any expenses have been incurred in connection with leave breaking which the Offender has been ordered to refund it is to be entered in the Defaulters Book as part of his punishment.

In lieu of No 10. Admiralty Punishment, a fine will be inflicted of one shilling for each day, viz. For an offence which would be punishable by seven days No 10 a fine of seven shillings will be inflicted.

Gambling is strictly prohibited. Card playing of all kinds will be stopped

The Discipline 47.

Men of the Naval Force are not to take orders direct from the Officers of the Military Force.

Such orders must pass through the Naval Officer in command of them.

Men of the Permanent Naval Force are warned that it is their imperative duty to remain per fectly neutral in the matter of strikes.

If proved to have acted otherwise they will be severely punished.

No man who is in the report for committing an offence is entitled to go on shore bit in cases where the offence committed is trifling the ex ecutive Officer is to use his discretion as to granting leave

Marks of Respect 51

Men on passing, or being by or speaking to an Officer are always to salute according to the custom of the Service, also at all musters and issue on passing round on their names being called.

When under arms they will salute as taught in the Rifle Exercises.

Men on shore on leave are to salute their own Officers whether in uniform or plain clothes, and all other Officers Naval or Military in uniform.

Coxwains of Boats, when away in their [brats?] are to salute all Officers in the cus tomary manner.

Boatkeepers, Side party. [xe?] are to be parti [cularlin?] saluting Officers coming alongside or leaving the Ship, also Officers in uniform passing close to the Ship.

Regulations respecting Lights xc. 55

No lights are to be used in the holds or store rooms except in good lanterns with glasses complete.

No candles are to be stuck against the beams or any other part of the Ship.

In the lower deck Messes all lighted candles are to be in candlesticks or sconces.

Men reading or sewing on the Main deck forward are not to use naked lights, but may use the hand lantern belonging to their part of the Ship, if not otherwise required.

Only the authorised lights are permitted after the evening rounds.

The Ward Room, and Smoking Room Lights until 11 P.M.

If required beyond that time permission must be obtained from the Com manding Officer. Care is to be taken that all lights that have been used by dockyard men and others Artificers are properly extinguished.

Only Bryant & Mays Safety Matches are to be allowed on board and every precaution is to be taken in their use. Matches are not to be allowed in the Store rooms, Bread room, Shop room or holds before any person enters a Magazine it is
